SBC runs Climate Change Risk and Adaptation Workshop in Newcastle

Sustainable Business Consulting Climate Change Adaptation WorkshopBarbara Albert from Sustainable Business Consulting conducted a workshop in Newcastle on risks and opportunities of climate change on behalf of the OEH. Only recently, severe floods affected the Central Coast and Hunter regions in NSW. A lot of the participants were sharing their experience of the impacts the severe weather had on their operations. Phone and internet lines were cut, power supply was lost for days and trees had to be cleared from driveways to provide access to the premises. Generators were used to provide essential services, but some of them were not working as expected, as they had not been regularly tested.

After morning tea, we asked the participants to work in groups according to their industry sector and to brainstorm climate change risks and opportunities for their sector. The photo shows how risk relationships were developed and how potential mitigation measures were uncovered. As a result of the workshop, a lot of the organisations are now planning to incorporate climate change risks into their strategic business planning.
